Welcome to Old Colorado City!
Welcome to the "Wild West!" There's absolutely nothing boring about this three-block stretch of Colorado Avenue! As the first territorial capital of Colorado and, later, as the gateway to Cripple Creek's fabulous gold mines, Colorado City was home to a wonderful collection of characters. On the north side of the street, you'd find doctors, lawyers, and merchants; on the south side of the street, you could wet your whistle at one of 24 saloons. Other "entertainment" was only another block south, but don't dare let the sheriff of El Paso County catch you there!
The "Wild West" Guided Tour introduces you to many of the folks, both fine and not-so, who made this town so memorable. While the National Historic District (designated in 1977) today contains a variety of businesses, shops, galleries, and restaurants, you will see examples of fine Victorian architecture and learn the stories of the original owners and their contributions and legacies. Lots of fun!
